Life provides a never ending stream of events, both personal and professional, that can knock us over. When we’re triggered and reacting to the events, it can feel like running a gauntlet between fires and the fire hoses sending things our way.
What enables people to persevere and achieve amazing results in the face of these surprises and set-backs is resilience. Imagine having your livelihood dependent upon the traffic driving by your establishment, and then one day the traffic is permanently re-routed around your town. Not only has your business been impacted, your family, friends and whole town have been shocked by this change. The highway running through town is de-listed and removed from maps. What would you do?
Faced with this situation, Angel Delgadillo of Seligman, Arizona worked for nine years to have his state recognize the highway as a historic route, setting an example for seven other states to follow. He tirelessly promoted the historic nature and experience of that highway to tourists every day for decades, and continues to meet with tourists and tell his stories in his late-80’s. He is an example of resilience. For more on Angel’s story, see “The Guardian Angel of Route 66”.
Resilience can be developed with mindful awareness, clarifying our intentions and commitments, choosing the ground and center from which to act, and utilizing the knowledge, skills and energy from accessible resources to work toward a greater purpose. As we develop resilience, we are able to more quickly recover our balance and move forward in situations filled with adversity and complexity.
I invite you to reflect on the situations in your life where cultivating resilience would strengthen your effectiveness.
