Regain Balance and Choose to Create

Clear Confident Leader Weekly Observer, Issue #81
From the Greenbelt of Boise Idaho, Crisp Blue Sky

Amidst the cacophony of information, events and activities today, it is easy to be knocked off balance, become overwhelmed and react out of fear or anger.

Constant reactivity generates a downward spiral until we burnout internally or flameout externally.

Many leaders I work with reach a state of exhaustion and search for what to do next. I offer them simple practices to pause and observe their habit nature in the midst of complexity.

By pausing and self-observing we create openings to regain our balance, again and again and again. As we do, choices emerge:
  • Do I pause to stabilize and then continue as I was before?
  • Or, do I consolidate and integrate what there is to learn, developing myself to create new possibilities toward a greater purpose?

We all benefit by interrupting downward cycles of reactivity, fear and anger, to create upward spirals toward a common purpose.

At this Fall Equinox, where the earth’s axis is vertical relative to the sun’s rays, when day and night reach a momentary equilibrium and we pause between seasons, it is an opportunity for reflection:
  • What practices help me pause reactive downward spirals and regain my balance?
  • With fresh equilibrium, how do I develop to create anew with those around me?

I help leaders and teams regain their balance, develop and create new possibilities.

Amidst rising unrest, now is a time to pause reactivity, develop ourselves and create anew!

Let Go of Control, Be in the Flow

The leaders and teams I work with are face continuous change.

Whether it is retail, healthcare, technology, manufacturing, professional services or even government agencies, the operating environments are constantly evolving.

There is an increasing and often overwhelming number of requests for time and attention. When the pressure builds beyond a manageable point, the common tendency is to regain control by tightening up. This shows up as physical tension, anxious and fearful emotions, and conditioned habit patterns of fight, flight, freeze or appease.

The problem is our reaction to tighten up holds us back from creatively engaging with our teams and partners to deal with what’s most important right now.

Consider your patterns for dealing with the pressure of incoming requests for your time and attention. How do you respond when it begins to feel unmanageable?

Imagine being on the raft in the picture above. What’s the impact you’ll have by attempting to take control in the middle of a rapid?

The good news is we can develop our capacity for presence and resilience, learning to let go of control and be in the flow to create with what’s happening now. The leaders and teams who master these skills create new possibilities in the midst of adversity.

I help people become Clear Confident Leaders, building Teams that Achieve with presence and resilience to create new possibilities in the midst of adversity. I will close the fall enrollment window for new clients on September 21st. If you're interested, visit here.

People often ask what I do, and when I respond that I’m a Team Leadership Coach the conversation can stop with a lot of unanswered questions if I don’t continue.

What I really do is help people find the path forward that’s right for them. We start with where they are, with all the complexity, uncertainty and challenges they face.

We identify and envision what extraordinary outcomes might look like in six months to a year. Often that can be summed up with I’m a Clear, Confident Leader acting with Presence and Resilience, Creating New Possibilities and Building Innovative Teams that Achieve.

Then we set to work. We use real life situations to uncover the strengths they have to build upon, and the patterns that hold them back. I provide curated resources to develop new perspectives. We design safe experiments to try out new ways of thinking, being and acting. We agree upon pragmatic practices to build new competencies.

It is a journey of learning and discovery that is energizing as progress emerges.

What’s the difference between reading a book, listening to a podcast or taking a course and working with me. My clients tell me it’s that I help them find the right path for them.

I assist teams and leaders create new possibilities and improve team effectiveness, while developing team leadership and coaching skills. If you’d like to find the right path for you, visit here.

Celebrating the Gifts of a Master

I’m surrounded by the signs of transition as we move from winter to spring. Snow intermixed with rain. Clouds being parted by the sun, trees budding, and the return of birds. Amidst this season of new growth and development I received a gift from a master, Doug Silsbee.

In the martial arts realm, a Sensei is one who has gone before us, and embodies their commitment to show us a way. In the realm of leadership and coaching, Doug is a masterful Sensei.

I was introduced to Doug by a colleague shortly after leaving my career at HP, as he suggested I read Doug’s Presence-Based Coaching book and encouraged me to learn from Doug, saying “what he offers works, and keeps on working.”

Doug introduced me to tools and skills to artfully support the growth and development of others through coaching, and invited me on a journey of self-development and transformation of my leadership amidst the complexity and uncertainty of today’s world.

It is challenging to maintain our balance and creatively respond to the pressures rushing around us. We frequently react out of unconscious patterns that enabled us to survive to this point, yet now get in our way. Doug offered ways to observe myself, my habits and impulses, and practices to develop my presence to consciously create with the context of each moment.

Over the past five years Doug synthesized his work into a set of tools and practices for all of us to creatively engage with the complexity and uncertainty we face. Last week he offered this new gift, Presence-Based Leadership: Complexity Practices for Clarity, Resilience, and Results that Matter. It provides a field guide for navigating the territory. And, it invites us to embark on a journey of self-development and transformation to create a better world in the families, teams, organizations and communities in which we live and work.

Simply reacting from conditioned responses is not enough. Returning to a remembered past is not possible. This point in the history of our world requires evolving our conscious practice of leadership to create a better future.  Where we go from here depends on us rising to the occasion.

Doug was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer six months ago. He continues to embody presence and his living commitment to show us a way. I am eternally grateful for the gifts he shares.

If you’d like to listen to Doug introduce his work, an interview with Amiel Handelsman is available in two parts Part One and Part Two. If you’d like to learn more about programs and practitioners, visit Presence-Based® Coaching.com

I work with teams and leaders to create better results through the conscious practice of presence. Let’s create a better future today!
