Clear Confident Leader Weekly Observer, Issue #80
From the Greenbelt of Boise Idaho, Shorter Days

As we make the turn toward fall, we feel the change in light, the shortening of the days, and the impulse to act before winter comes.

The actions we take now create the future we’ll experience for many days to come.

We’re constantly choosing how to spend our time and energy, sometimes consciously, and most often not. The most frequent question I hear is, what needs to be done today?

It leads to a frenzy, completing unfinished tasks and “fighting fires” as a sign of “progress”. Most people “fighting fires” eventually burn themselves out.

We rarely ask, what do I need to practice today, to create the future I want?

In a recent conversation with a leader, we talked about the importance of balancing daily production, change projects, and developing himself and his team.

By starting with what do I need to practice today to create the future I want, he was able to identify a simple approach to connect all three. He started with what he would practice to develop himself and his team as they approached each day.

Whether its conscious or not, what we practice today creates the future we will live in tomorrow.
  • What are you practicing?
  • Is it creating the future you want?

I help leaders and teams create new possibilities for the future today. I will close the fall enrollment window for new clients on September 21st. If you're interested in enrolling, visit here.

Let Go of Control, Be in the Flow

The leaders and teams I work with are face continuous change.

Whether it is retail, healthcare, technology, manufacturing, professional services or even government agencies, the operating environments are constantly evolving.

There is an increasing and often overwhelming number of requests for time and attention. When the pressure builds beyond a manageable point, the common tendency is to regain control by tightening up. This shows up as physical tension, anxious and fearful emotions, and conditioned habit patterns of fight, flight, freeze or appease.

The problem is our reaction to tighten up holds us back from creatively engaging with our teams and partners to deal with what’s most important right now.

Consider your patterns for dealing with the pressure of incoming requests for your time and attention. How do you respond when it begins to feel unmanageable?

Imagine being on the raft in the picture above. What’s the impact you’ll have by attempting to take control in the middle of a rapid?

The good news is we can develop our capacity for presence and resilience, learning to let go of control and be in the flow to create with what’s happening now. The leaders and teams who master these skills create new possibilities in the midst of adversity.

I help people become Clear Confident Leaders, building Teams that Achieve with presence and resilience to create new possibilities in the midst of adversity. I will close the fall enrollment window for new clients on September 21st. If you're interested, visit here.

People often ask what I do, and when I respond that I’m a Team Leadership Coach the conversation can stop with a lot of unanswered questions if I don’t continue.

What I really do is help people find the path forward that’s right for them. We start with where they are, with all the complexity, uncertainty and challenges they face.

We identify and envision what extraordinary outcomes might look like in six months to a year. Often that can be summed up with I’m a Clear, Confident Leader acting with Presence and Resilience, Creating New Possibilities and Building Innovative Teams that Achieve.

Then we set to work. We use real life situations to uncover the strengths they have to build upon, and the patterns that hold them back. I provide curated resources to develop new perspectives. We design safe experiments to try out new ways of thinking, being and acting. We agree upon pragmatic practices to build new competencies.

It is a journey of learning and discovery that is energizing as progress emerges.

What’s the difference between reading a book, listening to a podcast or taking a course and working with me. My clients tell me it’s that I help them find the right path for them.

I assist teams and leaders create new possibilities and improve team effectiveness, while developing team leadership and coaching skills. If you’d like to find the right path for you, visit here.

Let Go of Being an Expert

Clear Confident Leader Weekly Observer, Issue #77
From the Greenbelt of Boise Idaho, Fresh breeze

Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something because you’re not an expert?

It shows up in surprising ways:
  • I was never good at …
  • I don’t know how to …
  • Other people know more/are better at … than I am.
  • If only other people saw me as an expert, I’d be okay.
  • And one of my favorites, If I just learn one more thing, then I’ll be ready.

As we grow in our professions and lives, we create stories about needing to have the answers before we step into new situations. In doing so we create a threshold to cross before we’ll start, that prevents us from beginning.

We forget that expertise is an outcome of exploring, learning, practicing, and continuous improvement. Achieving a level of mastery is the acknowledgment of progress made, not an end.

We come into this world as beginners, full of curiosity and a willingness to discover what’s possible. This beginner’s mindset is one to keep coming back to throughout our lives. When we let go of being an expert and explore the possibilities, we make progress instead of barriers.

I assist teams and leaders to create new possibilities, and improve team effectiveness while developing team leadership and coaching skills. To learn more visit here.
